Debating and Public Speaking

Debating at Peace Lutheran College has acquired a strong pedigree.  If offers the chance for students to participate in an activity that requires teamwork, an ability to think analytically and effective oral presentation skills.  As such, it is an activity that readily complements the School’s academic program.

Debating is offered through the Rotary Junior and Senior debating competitions during Term 1, with the specific timing of a student’s involvement dependent on their age group.  Workshops are usually arranged at the start of each year.

Teams are coached by experienced teaching staff and meeting times for the purpose of preparation are arranged via mutual agreement between coach and team members at least once a week.

Performance – Musicals and Concerts

Middle and Senior School students are given the opportunity to perform in the College productions.  Each even year, Colour-Ex, an  extravaganza of Visual Art, Drama, Music, Dance and Fashion is presented at the Cairns Civic Theatre.

A College Musical, such as our last success Aladdin, is produced each odd year.  This production encompasses the dedication and commitment of staff and students with many hours of hard work and rehearsal culminating in a truly magical production.  Our musicals are also performed at the Cairns Civic Theatre.

Adventure Under Sail

Adventure Under Sail A voyage on "South Passage does more than teach the basics of sailing.  "South Passage" is a 100ft gaff-rigged schooner, built along the lines of the famed American pilot schooners and the infamous blackbirders.  It was privately funded and made available to the Sail Training Association of Queensland to operate as a sailing ship.

Adventure Under Sail increases a student's ability to live and cooperate with fellow human beings.  The voyage aims to give experiences of great adventure, provide difficult and unexpected situations and implant the idea of enthusiastic cooperation under competent leadership as a sensible way of dealing with life's problems.  This ability to work as a team member is a great asset in today's society.

Other activities may include swimming, snorkelling, beach games and walks on islands.  Whether working or relaxing, off-watch or on-shore, much humour and comradeship form the basis of many new, long-lasting friendships.

Adventure Under Sail is offered to Year 10 and Year 11 students.

 Community Service Projects

Student leaders and their piers actively participate in Community Service Projects at Peace.  Fundraising for charities such as Shave for a Cure, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and Relay for life are well supported by Senior students and staff.  In 2005, 2006 and 2007, Peace Lutheran College was awarded the prize for highest fundraiser for Secondary Schools.
