Sport at Peace



"Peace Lutheran College is becoming renowned for its sporting achievements. A wide range of opportunities are available including carnivals, district and regional sport, inter-school sport and College teams."

Core sports program

Introduces students to various activities and provides the skills for them to then participate in various games and team sports.

Carnivals

Students are involved in the three big sports carnivals for the year:

  • Swimming – Term 1 (Middle and Senior students)
  • Cross Country – Term 2 (Junior, Middle and Senior students)
  • Track and Field – Term 3 (Junior, Middle and Senior students)

College Teams

Students who excel in school sports carnivals may then be selected in College teams and compete against other schools in the Cairns district.

Several Peace Lutheran College students have progressed to compete at national level, with some students also representing Australia at the Pacific School Games.

Swim & Survive

Incorporated in the College's HPE program:

Prep to Year 9 - Undertake swim and survival skills at Marlin Coast Swim & Leisure Centre.

Year 10 - The opportunity to attain their Bronze Medallion as part of the Swim & Survive program.

Year 5 - Participate in a surf lifesaving program in coordination with Cairns Surf Lifesaving Club (SLSC).

District Sport

Our districts are Barron River for 10 – 12 year olds and TCN (Trinity Coast North) for 13 - 19 year olds. District trials are run throughout the year at various schools around Cairns and students can nominate to attend.

Students are awarded Bronze Sports Awards for TCN and Barron River teams and Silver Awards for Peninsula teams. In the past few years, Peace Lutheran College has had a consistent annual record of approximately 50 Bronze Award recipients, 20 Silver Award recipients and two Gold Award recipients.

Inter-school Sport

JSS (Junior Secondary Sport)

Participation is available to year 7, 8 and 9 students in terms 3 and 4 each year.

Students nominate for teams and then go through a trial process to secure their place. Every student is placed in a team and works with that team throughout the semester.

Students travel off campus on Wednesday afternoons, during school time, to compete against other schools in the Cairns region.

  • Football - Soccer (boys and girls)
  • Netball (girls)
  • Touch Football (boys and girls)
  • Volleyball (boys and girls)

Peace Lutheran College has been Cairns champions in Touch Football, Volleyball and Basketball. Since the introduction of the Aggregate Champion School (that is, most points per school population), our College has won Champion School every year!

CISSA (Cairns Secondary Sporting Activities)

Participation is available to year 10, 11 and 12 students in terms 1 and 2 each year.

Students nominate for teams and then go through a trial process to secure their place. Every student is placed in a team and works with that team throughout the semester.

Team training takes place at a designated time each week and all students are encouraged to attend. Students then travel off campus on Wednesday afternoons, during school time, to compete against other schools in the Cairns region.

Peace Lutheran College has won Division 1 Championship in Volleyball and Basketball; has been runner-up in Netball, Football (Soccer), Touch Football and AFL. The College’s AFL and girls Volleyball teams have also progressed to Premier Division and have come very close to winning the overall championship several times.

Regional Sport

Our region is ‘Peninsula’ – selection in a Peninsula team provides students with a pathway to State and National Championships. In order to be selected in a Peninsula team, students generally need to attend district trials, although in some cases there is a paper nomination process.

Over the years, Peace Lutheran College has had several students progress through the Queensland Schools State Team in their chosen sport – this is the highest possible achievement in Australian School Sport. Some of our students who have attained this level:

Extra-curricular Sport

There are many extra-curricular sports opportunities offered at the College throughout the year. Student demand and local competition dictates what these are and when they occur, but some regular activities include:

Two early morning trainings are provided each week for students who wish to improve their sporting, athletic abilities and fitness levels.
