Adopt A Tiger Shark

Our College Captains are taking action to see a change in the world in which we all live.

Peace Lutheran College Captains Levi and Anika, along with Vice Captains Gomae and Jennifer have chosen the theme 'Ocean Awareness and Pollution' as their focus for 2021, and they have been completely dedicated to their cause of raising awareness of the plight of our oceans.

Their primary goal was to raise enough funds to purchase a satellite tag in order to adopt our very own Tiger Shark through the JCU tracking program.

The many exciting initiatives and activities they have been coordinating have seen them achieve this goal...

We are excited to introduce you to Saki (pronounced Sah-Kee). Named by Pastor Adam, after 'Sak', the word for shark in Torres Strait Creole.

Saki is a 4.1m female and is the largest Tiger Shark ever tagged in the Great Barrier Reef. She was tagged by Biopixel researchers on the 5th May 2021 in Repulse Bay in the Whitsunday Islands.

Thank you to the Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, we are able to follow Saki's movements.

A big thank you to the team at Biopixel Oceans Foundation for their support in helping us adopt Saki, and also James Cook University Cairns Campus who partner with Biopixel in conducting this research.

Our Captains' fundraising efforts continue through the Containers for Change, the main driver of their fundraising efforts, as it aligns with their Ocean Awareness and Pollution theme.

How can you help?
  1. Drop off your containers at your local Containers for Change collection centre and use the code C10419915 to ensure the funds are banked against our school fundraising.
  2. Drop off your containers at the school. The drop off location at the College is located beside the ITD building, directly across from the Science laboratories. Use the school entrance to drive down past the Performing Arts Centre and look for the bright pink bag beside the ITD building where you can deposit your containers.
And the winners are...

To assist in their efforts to raise funds for their 'adopt a Tiger shark' initiative, our College Captains ran a raffle offering some wonderful prizes that have been kindly donated by local tourism operators and businesses.

Congratulations to the winners of the Ocean Awareness Raffle:
